Quinney Marie Rodgers, a 23-year-old from the Solomon Islands, recently achieved a remarkable milestone by earning a gold medal at her graduation from the Fiji School of Medicine, following in the footsteps of her father, who accomplished the same feat 24 years ago. This significant achievement highlights the rarity of her family’s background, as both of her parents are distinguished medical professionals.
Reflecting on her journey, Ms. Rodgers expressed that her focus was not just on being the top student, but on continually improving in her studies, as she believes this approach truly makes a difference. Her decision to pursue a career in medicine was profoundly influenced at the age of 11 when she witnessed the devastation and suffering of war victims in her home country, during a visit to her mother, Dr. Elizabeth Rodgers, at a hospital.
Ms. Rodgers plans to return to the Solomon Islands to contribute to her community, while her mother will continue her role as a lecturer at the Fiji School of Medicine and her father works at the Pacific Community in Nabua. She emphasizes the importance of addressing the needs in her homeland, stating, “There is so much to be done back home.”
In a broader context, the graduation ceremony highlighted a significant increase in student enrollment at the Fiji School of Medicine, reaching over 1,000 students. Dean Dr. Wame Baravilala noted that a third of the students were on-campus, while many others participated in distance and flexible learning courses. Additionally, funding provided by the Vodafone ATH Trust enabled ten students to pursue overseas electives, expanding opportunities beyond just medical students.
