A Legacy of Excellence: Farewell to Barrie Sweetman

Family, friends, and colleagues came together at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Suva to honor the life of Barrie Sweetman, a prominent figure in Fiji and the Pacific who made significant contributions to sports, law, and public service. Sweetman passed away on December 11 at the age of 90, leaving behind a legacy characterized by loyalty, perseverance, and a strong sense of duty.

Throughout his life, Sweetman showcased remarkable dedication and ethical standards in various influential roles, including serving as the chairman of the Fiji Electoral Commission, the Constitutional Offices Commission, and the Consumer Council. His legal expertise was particularly noted during his time as president of the Fiji Law Society, where he had a lasting impact on the profession.

In the realm of sports, Sweetman’s contributions were extensive. He was a Trustee of the Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (FASANOC) for over 40 years, serving as its honorary solicitor from the 1970s until the early 2000s. He played significant roles in organizing major sporting events, chairing Appeals Tribunals for both the 1979 and 2003 South Pacific Games. As the first chairman of the Fiji Sports Council in 1978, he helped establish the organization and was pivotal in developing facilities for the 1979 Games. Furthermore, his leadership tenure as chairman of the Fiji Rugby Union from 1973 to 1982 coincided with key victories and the debut of Fiji Rugby Sevens on the international stage.

In acknowledgement of his exceptional contributions, FASANOC awarded Sweetman the Fiji Olympic Order in 2008. His family’s gratitude reflects a recognition of his impactful life filled with purpose and achievement. Following the church service, a private cremation took place.
