Families in Koro, Levuka, Lomaiviti, celebrated with heartfelt joy as they awaited the arrival of Goundar Shipping Limited’s MV Captain Inoke. This event held significant meaning not only for the shipping company but also for the Ratotodro family, as the vessel was named in memory of their late father, Captain Inoke Ratotodro.
Melaia Ratotodro, his eldest daughter, was overwhelmed with emotion as the ship arrived at Port Mua-i-Walu, reflecting on the legacy of her father. “Our dad, who was one of the longest-serving staff members of Goundar Shipping Limited, passed away last October, and in his honor, Goundar named this vessel after him,” she stated. Melaia expressed gratitude towards the company for the tribute, highlighting her father’s dedication and 30-year service to the organization.
George Goundar, the managing director, shared his sentiments, noting that Captain Ratotodro was not only a close friend but also an integral part of his company’s foundation. “When I started this company in 2011, he was right by my side, assisting me and providing invaluable advice about the workings of the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji,” Goundar remarked. He acknowledged Ratotodro’s significant contributions to the company’s operations, stating that he managed many aspects while Goundar focused on engineering.
The MV Captain Inoke is captained by Sainimere Qutonilaba, a talented 31-year-old from Savudrodro, Savusavu, Vanualevu, who joined Goundar Shipping as a cadet in 2011 and has consistently excelled.
Before embarking on a tour of the new vessel, a traditional ceremony was held, underscoring the cultural significance of the occasion.
This event not only commemorates a beloved figure in the community but also reflects the strong bonds and legacies within the maritime industry. It serves as a reminder of the importance of honoring our past while looking forward to future opportunities and achievements within the sector.
