Tevita Vakalalabure’s journey in boxing began with a sparring session that ignited his passion for the sport. Growing up in Natewa Bay, he stepped into the ring for the first time in 1990, achieving a knockout victory against Rohit Singh in Suva. Over his professional career, Vakalalabure participated in 26 fights, securing 14 wins, 9 losses, and 1 draw. Yet, it was not solely the outcomes that shaped his boxing journey but rather the love and commitment he displayed in every training session and fight.

Tevita fondly recalls the influence of Iferemi Ralulu, who introduced him to the essence of sparring in his village. “I started loving the sport when I was a young boy… he was the one teaching us,” Vakalalabure expressed. Among the highlights of his career was a notable victory over Sakaraia Ve, known as the Golden Boy of Fiji, in 1992—a moment he cherishes as one of his most memorable.

Reflecting on the current state of boxing, Vakalalabure expresses concern about the shift in the sport. He observes that the competitive spirit has diminished, with promoters often dictating matchups and some fighters shying away from tougher challenges. “In our time, we worked hard and trained to face anyone,” he noted, indicating a longing for the more competitive environment he experienced.

Looking towards the future, Vakalalabure is optimistic as he trains his son, Kali Tahikia Vakalalabure, who is an aspiring amateur boxer. His aim is to instill the same dedication and focus on fundamentals that characterized his own training. “I want to teach the young boxers to focus on the basics and work hard towards your goal,” he remarked, sharing his hope for the next generation of fighters.

In light of recent narratives surrounding Fiji’s boxing community, including success stories of local trainers and boxers advocating for the sport as a means of personal growth and discipline, Vakalalabure’s story reflects an enduring spirit. Despite the challenges facing boxing today, the commitment to mentoring young talent and fostering a passion for the sport offers a hopeful outlook for the future of boxing in Fiji.

The emphasis on training, legacy, and perseverance is echoed in the journeys of other boxers and coaches in Fiji, highlighting the resilience and potential within the community. As boxing continues to evolve, these inspiring stories serve as testaments to the transformative power of the sport.
