March 2023 marked the realization of a lifelong dream for a Fijian of Indian descent living in Fiji. The opportunity to visit India arose through the 74th Know India Programme, organized by the Indian High Commission in Fiji.
For nearly three weeks, the participant engaged in an exceptional journey, staying at the Hyatt Hotel in Delhi alongside a diverse group of 40 individuals from nine countries. This trip was not merely a visit but an immersive experience into India’s rich heritage and vibrant culture.
The adventure began in Delhi, where the bustling city blended modernity with tradition. The Hyatt Hotel served as a luxurious base for exploring the city’s numerous historical attractions, each possessing deep significance.
One of the highlights was a visit to the Taj Mahal in Agra, celebrated as one of the world’s most beautiful monuments and a symbol of love. The grandeur of the white marble façade was breathtaking, and witnessing the intricate carvings and the peaceful reflection in the nearby pool was awe-inspiring. Standing before the Taj Mahal underscored the timeless beauty that connects generations.
Another notable visit was to the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun, providing insight into India’s military heritage and the training of future army leaders. The rich history of the academy and its contributions to India’s defense left a lasting impression on the participants.
The exploration of Delhi included visits to renowned historical sites such as the Red Fort, where the grandeur of Mughal architecture was evident, and the Old Fort (Purana Qila), which revealed layers of the city’s history. India Gate, a memorial honoring soldiers who died in World War I, served as a solemn reminder of their sacrifices, while the gardens surrounding it provided a serene escape from the city.
Raj Ghat, the memorial dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi, was a touching experience. The simplicity of the site, marked by a black marble platform and an eternal flame, paid homage to Gandhi’s lasting legacy. Visiting the location where the Father of the Nation was cremated was a humbling experience.
The Rashtra Bhawan, or Rashtrapati Bhavan, was another remarkable stop. The expansive presidential residence, known for its architectural elegance and vast gardens, offered insight into India’s democratic framework.
The Bharat Mandapam, a new convention center, showcased India’s modernity and commitment to international collaboration with its sleek design and state-of-the-art facilities.
An engaging visit to the Prime Minister’s Museum provided a fascinating look at India’s political history through exhibits featuring memorabilia and interactive displays that brought the stories of India’s leaders to life.
Evenings in Delhi were highlighted by visits to vibrant night markets, immersing in the sensory overload of local crafts, textiles, and street food, allowing for deeper engagement with the dynamic culture.
Throughout the trip, the camaraderie among participants fostered a sense of global unity, celebrating shared stories and diverse backgrounds.
Returning to Fiji, the participant took home not only souvenirs but a deeper appreciation for India’s cultural richness and historical depth. The Know India Programme transcended mere travel; it celebrated heritage and forged connections between the Indian diaspora and its roots.
In reflecting on this dream journey, the participant expressed gratitude for the chance to explore India’s varied facets, from ancient monuments to lively markets, creating lasting memories and a profound connection to their heritage.
