At the age of 42, Vani Sokomuri has made her family proud by becoming the first to obtain a tertiary education qualification. She graduated among 28 others from the Then India Sanmarga Ikya (TISI) Sangam College of Nursing and Health Care Education with a National Certificate in Aged Care and Community Care Level Three.
The graduation ceremony took place at the Civic Centre in Labasa, where she shared her motivating journey that required dedication and perseverance over six challenging months. As an expectant mother of her seventh child, Vani described her late-night study sessions that often extended until 1 a.m. Following these, she would rise early, even waking up at 2 a.m. at times, to study after preparing breakfast and ensuring her children were ready for school.
Her weekdays were filled with a flurry of activities. “Monday to Friday felt like rush hour,” she recounted. After dropping her children off, she arranged for a babysitter for her youngest and made sure to attend classes that commenced at 8 a.m.
Hailing from Baravi Village, Navakasiga, Bua, Vani was recognized as the Best Clinical Student Female during her graduation. Despite having completed Year 13 at Labasa Sangam (SKM) College and starting a Bachelor of Commerce at the University of the South Pacific, financial hardships forced her to step away from her studies to prioritize family after marriage.
“I always wanted to study,” she reflected, emphasizing her long-held dream of pursuing tertiary education. Vani aims to set a positive example for her children, demonstrating that aspirations should never be forsaken. She expressed gratitude to her husband, Napolioni Latianara, who is an officer with the Labasa Corrections Service, for his unwavering support throughout her academic journey.
This story showcases the incredible resilience and determination of individuals like Vani, reminding us that it’s never too late to pursue our dreams. Her success not only builds her legacy but also inspires her children and community to dare to chase their aspirations, regardless of the challenges they face.
In summary, Vani Sokomuri’s story is a powerful testament to perseverance, and she stands as an inspiration for anyone juggling multiple responsibilities while pursuing educational goals.
