A Journey Home: Discovering Heritage in India

In March, a longstanding aspiration was fulfilled as a Fijian of Indian descent embarked on a journey to India, facilitated by the 74th Know India Programme organized by the Indian High Commission in Fiji. Over the course of nearly three weeks, the participant stayed at the Hyatt Hotel in Delhi, becoming part of a diverse group of 40 individuals from nine countries, all of whom sought to immerse themselves in the rich heritage and vibrant culture of India.

The adventure began in Delhi, where the mix of modernity and tradition was evident everywhere. The luxurious Hyatt Hotel served as a base from which they explored the plethora of attractions the city has to offer, each steeped in historical significance.

A standout moment of the trip was the visit to the Taj Mahal in Agra, known worldwide for its beauty and as a symbol of love. As the group approached this majestic monument, the stunning white marble façade left them in awe, with intricate carvings and the reflection of the structure in the surrounding water creating a breathtaking experience.

An insightful exploration of the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun was another highlight, offering a glimpse into the training of future leaders of the Indian Army. Guided tours and discussions with cadets highlighted the institution’s significant role in India’s military heritage, instilling a deep sense of pride.

The exploration of Delhi continued with visits to several historical landmarks, such as the Red Fort, which showcased the grandeur of Mughal architecture, and the Old Fort (Purana Qila), which revealed stories from Delhi’s ancient past. India Gate, a somber memorial for soldiers who perished in World War I, and Raj Ghat, the memorial to Mahatma Gandhi, were poignant reminders of the nation’s history.

The journey included a memorable visit to the Rashtra Bhawan (Rashtrapati Bhavan), the presidential residence, which is notable for its architectural elegance. The Bharat Mandapam, a newly inaugurated convention center, demonstrated India’s modern advancements and commitment to international cooperation.

An engaging visit to the Prime Minister’s Museum brought the country’s political history to life through personal memorabilia and interactive displays that showcased the contributions of its leaders.

Evenings were filled with vibrant experiences in Delhi’s night markets, offering a sensory overload of sights, sounds, and culinary delights, while fostering deeper connections with local vendors and the rich cultural landscape.

Throughout the trip, camaraderie among participants from various nations added to the experience, creating a shared sense of global unity. Upon returning to Fiji, the traveler brought back more than just souvenirs; a deep appreciation for India’s cultural and historical depth was cultivated.

The Know India Programme delivered not just a journey but a celebration of heritage, connecting the Indian diaspora with its roots. The participant expressed gratitude for the opportunity to explore the many facets of India, emphasizing that this experience went beyond mere sightseeing, acting as a profound connection to their heritage.
