A Historic Graduation: One Indo-Fijian’s Journey to Corrections Officer

Deepak Deo experienced a day filled with emotion as he celebrated his graduation alongside 63 other recruits from the Fiji Corrections Service. At 34 years old, Deo, hailing from Wailevu in Labasa, made headlines as the only Indo-Fijian in his graduation cohort, marking a significant milestone as he became the first in his family to wear the brown uniform of a Corrections Officer.

His journey was no small feat; after undergoing 14 weeks of intensive training, Deo triumphed over financial and language barriers, attributing his success to the unwavering support and foundation provided by his parents. He expressed hope for the youth in his community, encouraging them to set ambitious goals and pursue careers that contribute to a safer, crime-free society.

“Challenges I faced included the Fijian language, which was initially tough, but with the help of my colleagues, I gradually improved,” Deo shared, reflecting on the camaraderie that assisted him in overcoming obstacles throughout his training.

Among the graduates was Fakaofo Tonga, a 19-year-old from His Majesty’s Prison in Tonga. Tonga earned the Best Physical Recruit Award and praised the Tonga Correctional Services for the opportunity to participate in the rigorous training in Fiji. He acknowledged the early mornings and sacrifices made but emphasized that all such efforts were directed toward a greater purpose.

This graduating class includes recruits from various regions across Fiji, showcasing a diverse representation from Tailevu, Naitasiri, Ra, Ba, and several other localities, further enhancing the community involvement in the Corrections Service.

The graduation event not only signifies personal achievements but also foreshadows a brighter, collaborative future for the Fiji Corrections Service, emphasizing ongoing training, professionalism, and rehabilitation. As they step into their new roles, these recruits carry the hope of transforming the corrections landscape in Fiji for the better.
