As Kevin Naiqama looks back on a remarkable 15-year international career with the Vodafone Fiji Bati, he expresses optimism about the team’s potential to reach the finals of the 2026 Rugby League World Cup in England. Naiqama, who has participated in two World Cup semifinals, recently played what is anticipated to be his final game, a resounding 56-6 victory over the Cook Islands. His teammates were eager to honor him in front of a large family audience at Suva’s HFC Stadium.

Following their 22-10 loss against the Kumuls in the opening round of the Pacific Championships, the Bati must now depend on the Aitu to defeat Papua New Guinea in Port Moresby, which would allow them to compete in a promotion-relegation playoff against the third-placed team from the Cup.

In his 26th Test, Naiqama reflected on the evolution of rugby league in Fiji since his debut in 2009, when only two NRL players represented the team. “Now, we have a wealth of talent, and players with NRL experience are being left out. I believe we’re only getting better,” he noted, expressing his belief that the team could excel in the next World Cup.

Tui Kamikamica, the Bati captain who succeeded Naiqama post-2022 World Cup, emphasized the team’s commitment to honoring Naiqama in his farewell match. Kamikamica recalled how Naiqama has always exhibited commitment and served as a mentor throughout his career.

Naiqama was visibly emotional before and after the match, cherishing the honor of representing Fiji alongside family members who traveled to support him. He highlighted the unique bond that comes from representing one’s country through familial heritage, stating, “You need no motivation to get up and represent your country; it’s a real easy step.”

Naiqama expressed surprise and gratitude upon seeing family members in attendance, a moment that added to the emotional weight of his last game.

In summary, Kevin Naiqama’s departure marks the end of an era for the Fiji Bati, but he remains hopeful about the future of the team, bolstered by emerging young talent. His heartfelt sentiments reflect a deep connection to his family, country, and the sport itself, inspiring a bright future for rugby league in Fiji. With a solid foundation of youth players, the prospects for the Bati in upcoming international competitions look promising.
