A vibrant traditional food feast is underway in Tubou Village to celebrate the installation of Ratu Tevita Kapaiwai Uluilakeba Mara as the new Turaga Tui Nayau and Sau ni Vanua o Lau. Local households are showcasing their culinary delights in a “Pola,” a communal feast that highlights the region’s rich cultural heritage and local produce.
Salanieta Makutu, a 73-year-old elder from Tubou, emphasized that the Pola is integral to their traditional ceremonies, featuring an array of homemade dishes, which include fresh seafood and locally grown vegetables. The community’s commitment to this event is evident, as preparations for the feast began nearly a month ago according to village resident Leba Adiseka.
The Pola includes a spectacular centerpiece of a whole roast pig, adorned with fruits, alongside traditional dishes such as kokoda and nama, reflecting the region’s bounty and local culinary traditions. This gathering not only celebrates the new chief’s installation but also reinforces community bonds and the shared spirit of the Lau Islands.
Previous articles have highlighted the significance of this installation in the context of a historical leadership transition, with the community eagerly anticipating the formal ceremonies set for July 8 in Nayau and July 10 in Tubou. The engagement of local youth and various delegations from across the Lau Group adds to the sense of unity, symbolizing a revival of cultural practices and a hopeful outlook for the future under new leadership.
As the community comes together, the Pola serves as a reminder of the power of tradition to foster resilience and cooperative spirit, reinforcing the meaningful connections that sustain cultural identity. It illustrates the community’s dedication to preserving their legacy while looking forward to a promising future.
