Epeli Balawa, a 50-year-old single father, experienced an emotional moment as he knelt down in gratitude when his daughter, Repeka Koroi, was awarded the Year Eight dux at Vudibasoga Catholic School in Seaqaqa, Macuata. This poignant event took place yesterday, and for Mr. Balawa, the tears he shed were those of joy. Repeka not only achieved this prestigious title but also received a sponsorship letter from Mahatma Gandhi Memorial High School, paving the way for her to continue her education and chase her sporting dreams.

Repeka, the second of four siblings, recently made headlines by winning gold in both the Under-14 girls 800 meters and 1500 meters finals during the Fiji Primary Schools Tucker Ice Cream Games held at HFC Bank Stadium in Suva. Reflecting on his journey, Mr. Balawa shared the challenges of raising his children alone since his wife left four years ago. His pride swelled knowing that his daughter followed in his footsteps, as he was also the Year Eight dux at Bulavou District School in 1989.

Repeka achieved a remarkable score of 425 out of 500 on her annual exams and aspires to be a primary school teacher. Currently living in the school’s hostel with her siblings aged six, ten, and 15, she makes it a point to spend time with her father every weekend. “I dedicate my achievement to my father and wish him long life from God since he is the only one I have,” she expressed, underlining the deep bond they share. Repeka has often found herself emotional, worrying about her father’s well-being while they are apart during the school week.

Her father’s selflessness was highlighted as she described his routine of waking up at 4 a.m. to prepare breakfast and get the younger children ready for school, despite the difficulties he faces. Repeka expressed her gratitude toward her teachers and credited her coach, Iosefo Apisai, for his guidance in helping her secure her gold medals.

This heartwarming story of resilience and dedication is a testament to the strength of family ties and the determination to succeed in the face of adversity. Both father and daughter exemplify perseverance and mutual support, reminding us that emotional bonds can fuel our aspirations and achievements, even amid challenges.

In summary, this narrative not only celebrates Repeka’s academic and athletic accomplishments but also highlights the enduring love and dedication that inspires such achievements. It serves as a hopeful reminder that with determination and support, young individuals can rise above their circumstances and achieve their dreams.
