A Father’s Pride: Son’s Graduation Triumph Moves Family to Tears

A father of five expressed his overwhelming pride and emotion after witnessing his eldest son, Sakaraia Qilu, 22, receive two prestigious awards at the Fiji National University graduation ceremony. Alipate Moli, who has worked tirelessly as the sole provider for his family, brought his whole family to celebrate Sakaraia’s accomplishments, which included the Outstanding Academic Achievement Graduate in Nursing and a Certificate of Excellence with Dean’s Honours.

Mr. Moli shared, “This is the proudest moment for any father who has been working day and night to ensure his children succeed.” Despite his demanding job in the hotel industry, which requires him to spend 11 days on the island and only three days at home, he makes it a priority to connect with his children and stay updated on their education.

Sakaraia’s achievements were not unexpected; he consistently excelled academically, having previously finished third in his class during Years Nine to Eleven at Saint Peter Chanel School in Korolevu, Nadroga. He also earned the title of best Biology student during his final high school years.

Sakaraia revealed that his motivation to study nursing stems from a passion for caring for others. He aspires to build on his nursing credentials by pursuing a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, ultimately aiming for a doctorate. He hopes to inspire his younger siblings to value education and avoid pitfalls such as drug use or idleness, emphasizing the significance of staying in school.

Expressing gratitude to his mother for her support and guidance, Mr. Qilu offered sage advice to others: “Surround yourself with better friends. A good circle can help you move forward and achieve your goals.”
