Epeli Balawa, a 50-year-old single father, was overwhelmed with emotion as he kneels in joy upon hearing his daughter Repeka Koroi’s name announced as the Year Eight dux award recipient at Vudibasoga Catholic School in Seaqaqa, Macuata, yesterday. The proud father, who works as a yaqona farmer in Korovuli Village, expressed that his tears were those of happiness, especially since Repeka has also received a scholarship from Mahatma Gandhi Memorial High School, allowing her to further her education and athletic pursuits.
Repeka, who is the second oldest of four siblings, excelled in athletics, having recently won gold medals in both the Under-14 girls 800 meters and 1500 meters finals at the Fiji Primary Schools Tucker Ice Cream Games in Suva. Reflecting on their challenging family journey since his wife left four years ago, Mr. Balawa spoke about the difficulties he faced while raising his four children.
Repeka, who achieved a score of 425 out of 500 in her annual examinations, dreams of becoming a primary school teacher. At just 14 years old, she resides in the school hostel alongside her siblings aged six, ten, and 15. “Every Friday we go home to spend time with dad and then return to school on Monday,” she shared, emphasizing her dedication to her father as the primary source of their strength.
In a heartfelt moment, Repeka recounted times when she would weep at the school dining hall, worrying about her father’s well-being. She acknowledged her father’s sacrifices, including waking up at 4 AM to prepare breakfast and get the younger siblings ready for school, revealing the deep bond and mutual love that guides their family.
Repeka expressed her gratitude to her teachers and her coach, Iosefo Apisai, for their support in helping her secure her athletic victories.
