A father of five was overwhelmed with emotion after witnessing his eldest son receive two prestigious awards at the Fiji National University graduation ceremony. Alipate Moli, the family’s primary provider, attended the event with his family to support his 22-year-old son, Sakaraia Qilu, who earned both the Outstanding Academic Achievement award in Nursing and a Certificate of Excellence accompanied by Dean’s Honours.
“This was the proudest moment for any father who has worked tirelessly to ensure his children succeed,” expressed Mr. Moli. He shared the challenges of his job as a hotel worker, where he spends 11 days at a resort and only three days at home. Despite the limited time with his family, he consistently checks in with his children about their academic progress during his days away.
Mr. Qilu’s impressive academic record sets the stage for his future. He excelled in school, having secured third place as a student from Year Nine to Year Eleven at Saint Peter Chanel School, and was recognized as the best Biology student during his final two years. His passion for nursing stems from his desire to care for others.
“Choosing to pursue nursing, public health, or teaching reflects my love for helping people,” Mr. Qilu stated.
Looking ahead, Mr. Qilu plans to enroll in a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery program, with aspirations of obtaining a doctorate. He aspires to be a role model for his siblings, emphasizing the importance of education as a means of avoiding negative paths.
“I want them to know that staying in school is vital, and I hope they strive for the best to prevent falling into bad habits,” he said. He also credited his mother for her continuous support and guidance, which has been instrumental in his journey.
His encouraging advice to others includes the importance of surrounding oneself with supportive friends. “A good circle of friends can propel you forward in life,” he advised.
