It has been over three years since the disappearance of seven-year-old Chiraag Murthi from Taveuni Island in Fiji. Chiraag, who has a hearing and speech disability, went missing from his home in Qila on November 12, 2021. His father, Shyam Murthi, is urging the Fiji Police Force to intensify their efforts in finding his son.
Despite regularly visiting the Taveuni Police Station to inquire about updates, Mr. Murthi expresses frustration at the lack of progress. He describes the officers’ responses as dismissive and occasionally rude, leading him to suggest that police staff undergo training in anger management and customer service. He believes that their remote location on the small island has contributed to a lack of accountability.
The distraught father highlights the vulnerability of the island to risks such as human trafficking and kidnapping, noting the need for increased monitoring of local jetties, particularly given the presence of export businesses. Mr. Murthi remains committed to finding his son, stating that he plans to continue the search, even if it means spending another Christmas without him.
In response to the community’s concerns, the Acting Divisional Police Commander North, Superintendent Eroni Soqosoqo, assured the public that the case remains open and that the investigation is ongoing.
This heart-wrenching situation brings to light the challenges faced by families dealing with the mystery of a missing loved one. Mr. Murthi’s unwavering determination reflects the hope that many families cling to in difficult times. With ongoing efforts from both the family and the police, there is still a chance that Chiraag’s case may receive the attention it desperately needs.
The local community’s support and awareness might also play a crucial role in increasing vigilance and ensuring that such cases do not become cold.
