Epeli Balawa, a 50-year-old single father from Korovuli Village, was overwhelmed with emotion when his daughter, Repeka Koroi, was named the Year Eight dux at Vudibasoga Catholic School in Seaqaqa, Macuata. The heartfelt moment unfolded yesterday as Mr. Balawa dropped to his knees, shedding tears of joy not only for his daughter’s academic achievement but also for the sponsorship that Repeka received from Mahatma Gandhi Memorial High School for her future educational and athletic pursuits.

Repeka, a talented 14-year-old, has already made her mark by winning gold in both the Under-14 girls 800 meters and 1500 meters at the recent Fiji Primary Schools Tucker Ice Cream Games held at HFC Bank Stadium in Suva. Achieving a score of 425 out of 500 in her annual examination, she expressed her aspiration to become a primary school teacher. The second of four siblings, she shares a close bond with her siblings, aged six, ten, and fifteen, and has been staying at the school’s hostel while managing to return home every weekend to spend quality time with their father.

Reflecting on their family situation since her mother left four years ago, Mr. Balawa shared the challenges of raising four children on his own. He expressed pride in Repeka’s success, as she followed in his footsteps; he was also a Year Eight dux, having achieved this honor in 1989 at Bulavou District School. Repeka dedicated her accomplishment to her father, wishing him a long and healthy life, acknowledging the sacrifices he makes each day for their well-being.

Repeka recalled the emotional moments when she would cry silently at dinner, concerned about whether her father had enough to eat. She highlighted how, despite the hardships, her father wakes up early to prepare meals and get her younger siblings ready for school. She expressed gratitude towards her teachers and coach, Iosefo Apisai, for their support and guidance in her athletic pursuits.

This touching story of resilience, dedication, and family support serves as an inspiring reminder of the power of education and the lengths to which parents will go for their children’s success. Mr. Balawa’s commitment to his children is commendable, showcasing that, despite challenges, love and hard work can lead to remarkable achievements.

In summary, Repeka’s journey illustrates not only her individual accomplishments but also the importance of familial support, proving that with determination and encouragement, young individuals can overcome obstacles and achieve greatness.
