Reshna Devi, a resident of the Public Rental Board flats in Narere for the past 35 years, is embarking on an exciting journey towards homeownership thanks to the government’s rent-to-own initiative. On May 16, she was one of 46 recipients who received offer letters from the Public Rental Board (PRB) detailing the opportunity to purchase their homes at prices significantly below market value.

Devi, who has been living in her flat with the assurance of fulfilling her rental obligations—paying a mere $10 monthly—expressed her readiness to embrace this new chapter. She believes that her dedication and honesty over the years have finally borne fruit. “In my heart, it says I will do it,” Devi stated, showcasing her determination despite not having seen the complete offer details.

Housing Minister Maciu Nalumisa highlighted the initiative as a crucial step in enhancing housing accessibility for Fijians, particularly those from low-income backgrounds. He mentioned that beyond this current rollout, similar initiatives could also be implemented in other PRB estates, reflecting a broader commitment under the National Housing Policy to help residents transition from tenancy to ownership.

This positive development aligns with previous efforts aimed at improving housing conditions in Fiji, as seen in similar initiatives, such as the Lagilagi Housing project which has provided stable housing for many families. The government’s approach, offering below market rates with manageable payment options, holds promise for improving the quality of life for residents striving for stability.

Overall, programs like these not only symbolize hope for those like Devi but also highlight the importance of government initiatives in fostering community resilience and improving living conditions for low-income families across Fiji.
