Lusiana Kausoqo’s remarkable journey at the Australian High Commission in Fiji began in 1982 when, at just 25 years old, she faced her fears during a job interview, supported by her mentor Penny-Ana Urwin. Over the past 43 years, Lusi, as she is affectionately known, has served under 16 Australian High Commissioners, witnessing significant political and social changes in Fiji, from coups to acts of kindness from high commissioners and their spouses.
Originally from Buretu Village, Lusi credits her success to her early experiences with Mrs. Urwin, who not only encouraged her to apply for the position of housekeeper but also played a crucial role in her training in hospitality and cooking. Lusi’s career blossomed from housekeeping to cooking and event management, where she learned valuable skills that she has mastered throughout the years.
High Commissioners like Bob Cotton and Susan Boyd left a mark on her life, especially during challenging times such as the 1987 coup, which forced high commissioners to leave, and later during the 2000 coup, when she adeptly assisted expatriate staff with culinary and logistical support. The dedication and warmth of Australian officials have made a lasting impression on Lusi. She fondly recalls the compassionate actions of former high commissioners, including Judith Robinson and John Feakes, who went out of their way to provide personal support and nurture deep connections with their staff.
Lusi’s service continued seamlessly through political transitions, including the communication with past high commissioners, showcasing enduring relationships despite challenging circumstances. With the recent appointment of Peter Roberts as Australia’s new High Commissioner to Fiji, Lusi noted a refreshing change, with his wife Lisa engaging more personally with staff—an approach she finds both welcoming and new.
As Lusi prepares to close this chapter of her life, her tenure is a testament to the enduring bond between Fiji and Australia, built on mutual respect, cooperation, and shared experiences. With her full heart and countless memories, Lusi reflects on her career with pride, having contributed significantly to the bilateral relationship that richly enhances both nations.
Her story encapsulates the power of mentorship, resilience, and the spirit of friendship that transcends borders, creating a legacy of connection and collaboration that will continue to thrive in the future.
