Anginesh Prasad, a well-respected local football coach, has honored a cherished wish of his late father-in-law by leading the Labasa Football Association to victory in a recent tournament. Known affectionately as AJ within the football community, Prasad joined Labasa’s coaching team as a Technical Advisor during the 2024 FMF Inter District Championship (IDC). Working alongside Coach Ravneel Pratap, he played a pivotal role in securing a memorable win against Navua at Churchill Park in Lautoka.
In a conversation with FijiLive, Prasad dedicated this victory to his late father-in-law, Kamla Prasad, and expressed gratitude to his family in Lagalaga, Labasa. He revealed that his father-in-law had long wished to see Labasa clinch a tournament win. Although this goal was unmet during his father-in-law’s lifetime, Prasad felt compelled to fulfill this aspiration when contacted by Labasa President Rayaz for assistance in the IDC. He credited the success to the collective efforts of the players and officials involved.
Prasad emphasized the importance of the win, describing it as special for both himself and his late father-in-law. He is confident that his father-in-law is smiling down on the team, providing blessings as a passionate supporter. He outlined that fulfilling his duties as a coach is paramount, indicating his willingness to assist any district in need whenever called upon.
Reflecting on their strategy for the tournament, Prasad noted that the team’s goal was to win the initial group matches, which they accomplished. They rested key players with yellow cards for the match against Navua, ensuring their readiness for the semifinals and finals. Prasad shared insights into the tough nature of knockout matches, praising his players for maintaining their focus and successfully converting penalty attempts during a challenging shootout.
With the IDC victory now realized, Prasad, who also serves as the Operations Manager for P. Meghji Group of Companies in Lautoka, plans to take some time off before making decisions about his future coaching commitments. He expressed a willingness to step in to help any team that seeks his guidance, reaffirming his dedication to the sport.
