This year’s Christmas promises to be particularly meaningful for 70-year-old Selai Biu as she prepares to return to her village home in Lakeba, Lau, reuniting with family members, especially her brother. It’s been three decades since her last visit, making this trip even more significant.
The excitement in Ms. Biu’s journey is amplified by the challenging aftermath of the volcanic eruption in Tonga in 2022, which caused extensive damage, including to her home. After investing two years into reconstructing her family dwelling, Ms. Biu is now ready to see her new home as she travels back by boat with her brother.
Last Thursday, she, along with many other families, gathered at Port Mua-i-Walu (formerly Narain Jetty) to board the MV Lomaiviti Princess XII, eager to reconnect with their roots. “I’m excited to see what has become of the home. I’m taking a few things to help start decorating it,” Ms. Biu expressed.
Though Ms. Biu’s husband hails from Saqani in Vanua Levu, they have made Waibau, Naitasiri their home alongside their four children. With plans to spend both Christmas and the New Year in Lakeba, Ms. Biu’s journey reflects resilience and a deep connection to her family and heritage.
This story is uplifting, showcasing the spirit of familial ties and the courage to rebuild after adversity. As Ms. Biu embarks on this heartwarming journey, it serves as a reminder of the strength that comes from community and the joy of returning home after a long absence.
