Caines Jannif, a distinguished photography company, recently celebrated its remarkable 120th anniversary. The milestone was marked with a special dinner on February 26 at the Chili House in Suva, bringing together employees and their families to honor the deep-rooted relationships that have been formed over the decades.

The company’s journey commenced in 1904 when Fredrick Caines, driven by his passion for photography, took over the Le Faivre Photographic Studio and renamed it Caine’s Studios. Under his leadership, the studio thrived, especially after he welcomed Mr. N A Khan as manager in 1912. The entry of Khan’s nephews, Hannif Akbar and Ben Jannif, in 1924 and 1926, respectively, introduced new vigor to the company, allowing it to adapt to the rapidly changing photography industry.

Despite some hurdles, including Caines’ eventual withdrawal due to health issues in 1935, the resilience of the team ensured the company’s continuity. After several changes in leadership, including the inclusion of Amina Jannif in 1953 and the handover to Ikbal Jannif, the company embraced a period of growth and modernization that solidified its status in Fiji’s photography sector.

During the celebratory dinner, director Sofia Jannif reflected on the company’s legacy, poignantly noting how six years prior, their Raiwai Factory had suffered a devastating fire. “Tonight is about celebrating and let us all do that and enjoy,” she urged the attendees. Kelsey Jannif, the company’s longest-serving employee, shared her experiences and the evolution of photographic technology from manual processes to state-of-the-art digital services.

With a culture that fosters loyalty and camaraderie among staff, many employees have remained dedicated to the company since their youth. This commitment is evident in the words of employee Yangtesh Reddy, who expressed a strong bond with Caines Jannif, highlighting how the company views its employees as family.

Throughout its history, Caines Jannif has not only provided exceptional photography services but has also played a vital role in documenting Fiji’s historical moments, including the nation’s independence in 1970. This event was a pivotal one for Fiji, and the company was there to capture the essence of the moment.

As Caines Jannif moves forward, it aims to uphold and build upon its rich legacy, continuing to set high standards in the photographic industry. The company stands as a beacon of excellence, inspiring future generations while immortalizing Fiji’s unique cultural and historical moments through photography.

In summary, Caines Jannif’s journey over 120 years encapsulates perseverance, innovation, and a commitment to capturing the beauty of Fiji. The celebration of this milestone serves as both a remembrance of the past and a hopeful glance toward the future, reaffirming the company’s enduring impact on the photographic landscape. The legacy of Caines Jannif continues to inspire, promoting the essence of Fiji for years to come.
