Fiji’s oldest and most prominent indigenous women’s organization, the Soqosoqo Vakamarama iTaukei (SSV), is set to celebrate its centenary next Thursday, November 7. This significant event will honor a hundred years of promoting empowerment among indigenous women in Fiji.
The organization views this anniversary as a pivotal moment in its extensive history, acknowledging the dedication it has shown towards the health and well-being of its members. SSV has also expressed gratitude for the commitment of volunteers throughout its century-long journey.
“We owe our strength and resilience to the dedicated women of SSV who devote their time and energy to ensure our organization remains pertinent,” stated SSV president Adi Finau Tabakacoro. Looking forward, the SSV is poised to further its mission by focusing on wealth creation for its members.
To achieve these goals, SSV aims to transition into a self-sustaining entity, which may involve necessary updates to the organization’s constitution. These changes are expected to facilitate new opportunities for business ventures. Regardless of future developments, SSV remains committed to advocating for the indigenous populace, representing 200,000 members across 14 provinces, 189 districts, and 1,192 villages on critical indigenous issues.
A special celebration is planned to take place at the FMF Gymnasium in Suva, marking this historic milestone.
The work of SSV over the past century serves as an inspiring testament to the resilience and dedication of indigenous women, paving the way for future generations to thrive and succeed. This celebration not only honors their past but also looks forward to a future filled with potential and opportunities for all its members.
