The Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection, Lynda Tabuya, has expressed her support for Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu as the next President of Fiji. In her statement, Tabuya highlighted Lalabalavu’s leadership qualities and his advocacy for increasing the representation of women in leadership roles.

Tabuya noted her experience working with Lalabalavu during his tenure as Opposition Leader, Leader of Government Business, and Speaker of Parliament, commending his capable and equitable leadership. She emphasized his dedication to gender equality, stating, “As a woman leader, I never felt I was not an equal partner in decision making.”

She further remarked that Lalabalavu has actively created opportunities for female leaders to be recognized and engaged in discussions. According to Tabuya, to address the challenges of patriarchy, it is essential to have male allies in the fight for gender equality, and she regards the Speaker as a significant champion in this endeavor. She expressed her confidence that he would excel in the role of President.

Ratu Naiqama has accepted Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s offer to be the government’s nominee for the presidency, succeeding Ratu Wiliame Maivalili Katonivere, who recently withdrew his nomination. The election for the next President is scheduled to take place on October 31.
