A Mass at the Holy Eucharist Parish in Laucala Bay, Suva, celebrated the remarkable 75-year journey of Father James Ross, a dedicated member of the Pioneer Total Abstinence Association (PTAA) and a beloved Irish Marist priest in Fiji. This event highlighted Father Ross’s lifetime commitment to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, emphasizing his humble service rather than an eagerness for ecclesiastical expansion.
Archbishop Peter Loy Chong shared heartfelt anecdotes about Father Ross, showcasing his unique personality, including his delightful Irish humor and the endearing habit of carrying a comb in his back pocket. The Archbishop reflected on Father Ross’s significant influence in his life, particularly after the loss of Father Hannon, when he provided essential counsel during tough times.
“Father Ross has a legacy that is not rooted in grand achievements but is embedded in humble service—helping to establish educational institutions like St. Bede’s College, supporting families, and strengthening communities over decades,” Archbishop Chong stated. Even at the age of 91, Father Ross’s impact is felt through the lives he has shaped, the education he has provided, and the nurturing of the communities he has been part of.
PTAA, which originated in Dublin to encourage alcohol abstinence, reached Fiji in the 1960s thanks to the efforts of Columban priest Father PJ Kelly. Inspired by this mission and raised in Dublin, Father Ross dedicated himself to PTAA, shaping his early years and leading him towards a life rich in service.
Since arriving in Fiji in 1967, Father Ross has been pivotal in establishing St. Bede’s College, which became a beacon of education and community unity in Savusavu. The local community actively engaged in fundraising efforts to support the school, exemplifying the teamwork and resilience that Father Ross has long championed.
Beyond his clerical responsibilities, Father Ross assumed the role of mentor, empowering individuals and fostering collaboration in various community projects focused on sustainable development. His approach highlighted the Marist ethos of simplicity and presence, demonstrating a commitment to enriching the lives of others over seeking personal recognition.
