72-year-old defies age to launch village ferry under Fiji’s SEA Scheme

At 72 years of age, Renato Bulavakarua from Togo Village on Qamea Island is defying expectations and embarking on an adventurous new chapter in his life. Unlike many of his peers who might prefer a quiet life at home, Bulavakarua has recently received a new fibreglass boat as part of the Government’s Seafarers Entrepreneurial Assistance (SEA) Scheme, fulfilling a childhood dream of starting his own ferry service to transport villagers between Qamea and Taveuni.

Having worked at the Laucala Island Resort, Bulavakarua was inspired to act after learning about the benefits of the SEA Scheme through the Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development. He took the initiative to raise one-third of the boat’s costs, with the government contributing the remaining funds. Undeterred by social notions that he was too old to pursue his dreams, he stated, “I’m proof that age should never stop anyone from dreaming.”

Dr. Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu, the Minister for Health and Medical Services, applauded Bulavakarua’s determination during the handover event on behalf of the Minister for Rural and Maritime Development, Sakiasi Ditoka. The SEA Scheme aims to support hardworking Fijians like Bulavakarua by facilitating affordable access to boats and engines, transforming aspirations into tangible opportunities.

For Bulavakarua, the new boat represents much more than a mode of transport; it symbolizes independence and purpose. His journey resonates with other initiatives aimed at empowering individuals in Fiji, like those recently highlighted in stories of young graduates in the maritime sector. Don Uluibau, a 23-year-old, who graduated from a maritime program, also reflects the essence of resilience and determination in pursuing ambitions against the odds. His training and dream to sail echo the sentiments found in many success stories emerging from communities committed to fostering growth through maritime education.

Bulavakarua’s story reinforces the idea that it is never too late to pursue one’s aspirations. It serves as a beacon of hope for others, especially in rural areas, that hard work and determination can indeed lead to fulfilling dreams, regardless of age. The ongoing support from government initiatives like the SEA Scheme not only benefits individuals but uplifts entire communities by enhancing their economic resilience and access to vital services.
