Lice Mila Rasotale, a 63-year-old self-taught weaver from Wailotua No.1 in Tailevu, continues to embody the traditional craft of weaving, even as interest in the art declines among the younger generation in her village. With over four decades of experience, Lice has been weaving mats, a skill she learned through observing her grandmother. Despite the waning enthusiasm for this ancestral craft, she remains committed to preserving these traditions, all while supporting her family with her creations.
In a recent encounter, Lice detailed her weaving process by the roadside at Wainivo, where she was de-thorning freshly harvested pandanus leaves. “Even though my husband has passed away, I still contribute to family and village commitments,” she reflected. The mats she weaves are often used for family gatherings, allowing her to continue supporting her children.
While many have suggested she stop weaving due to her age, Lice remains undeterred. “I often say to them that God is with me. He gives me the strength to do it,” she shared, emphasizing her deep faith. Her ability to weave was nurtured from childhood, as she frequently observed her grandmother weaving in their village in Dakuivuna.
Reflecting on her experiences before electricity transformed daily life, Lice recalls how she and her seven children managed without modern conveniences. Her late husband worked as a farmer, and together they relied on the land to provide for their family. Even when her children were attending school, Lice stepped into the role of a breadwinner by selling produce at the Suva Market, where she would travel by bus with her yield.
God’s guidance has been a guiding force in her life. Lice expressed gratitude for the blessings witnessed in her family, particularly in seeing her children grow into responsible adults. Her life story highlights the resilience and dedication of women like her, who work tirelessly to uphold tradition while adapting to life’s challenges. Through her unwavering spirit and commitment to her craft, Lice Mila Rasotale serves as an inspiring example of strength and community in the face of change.
As the art of weaving continues to face challenges, there remains hope through individuals like Lice who cherish their heritage and inspire others to recognize the value of traditional skills.
