The incident in question occurred on January 30, 2023, when the accused allegedly wrongfully obtained $600 from a victim using the M-Paisa platform.

The victim transferred the money believing they were investing in an opportunity promoted on Facebook. However, after sending the funds, the accused’s mobile number was blocked by Vodafone, resulting in no refund for the victim. This situation was promptly reported to the Nakasi Police Station, leading to the accused’s detention.

Currently, the individual remains in police custody and is scheduled to appear in Nadi Magistrate Court later today. This case sheds light on the critical issue of online financial fraud, particularly through social media channels. It serves as a cautionary tale, emphasizing the necessity for vigilance during financial transactions initiated online.

Similar incidents have been reported recently, highlighting a growing concern regarding scams in digital platforms. In response, authorities are ramping up their efforts to protect consumers from fraudulent activities. Enhanced public awareness and law enforcement diligence are key strategies in the fight against such deceptive practices.
