Beyond the headline

Bula Si’a! Tsuyoshi Ishizawa, a JICA Volunteer currently engaged in the Clinical Governance Unit of Labasa Hospital, has shared his inspiring journey from Japan’s chilly Yamagata to the warm, vibrant environment of Fiji. With 14 years of professional experience as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist, specializing in infectious diseases and infection control, he is devoted to enhancing healthcare quality in his new setting.

Ishizawa’s work revolves around implementing the Japanese methodologies of 5S, KAIZEN, and Total Quality Management (TQM), all derived from the renowned Toyota Production System and tailored for the healthcare industry. The 5S principles—Sort, Set, Shine, Standardize, and Sustain—serve to create a well-organized environment, facilitating the quick identification of irregularities in healthcare settings.

The methodology emphasizes continuous improvement (KAIZEN) and ultimately aims for TQM in healthcare. Ishizawa conducts regular ward rounds to evaluate adherence to 5S practices, oversee medical supply management by checking expiration dates, and lead workshops to enhance staff understanding and skills related to these methodologies.

One compelling aspect of his work is showcasing practical applications that improve patient safety, such as using labeling and color-coding for medications to minimize errors. He praises the commitment and enthusiasm of Fiji’s healthcare professionals, finding their dedication a daily source of motivation.

Ishizawa believes that while the 5S system may appear simple, its capacity to significantly impact the future of healthcare quality and safety in Fiji is profound. His ongoing efforts are a testament to the transformative influence that dedicated individuals can have in improving healthcare delivery in diverse environments.
