“$5800 Theft from MP’s Mother Sparks Urgent Police Investigation”

A team from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) is looking into a theft involving $5,800 that was taken from the mother of Member of Parliament Alvick Maharaj. The incident reportedly occurred on December 19, 2024, when 66-year-old Malti Devi realized her purse was missing after visiting CWM Hospital to collect medication.

At first, she did not notice the absence of her purse; however, the following morning, she discovered it was gone while preparing for a physiotherapy session. Mr. Maharaj promptly contacted Bank South Pacific to block the card associated with her purse. To his dismay, the bank informed him that the card had already been used for several transactions, including withdrawals from ATMs and a purchase at Thirsty Liquor in Lami, totaling approximately $1,800.

Recognizing the urgency of the situation and aware of the evidence generated through the ATM transactions, Mr. Maharaj filed a formal complaint at the Raiwaqa Police Station and requested immediate action. He stated that an officer took his statement and mentioned that the case would be escalated to Totogo Police Station. Upon reviewing the bank statement, Mr. Maharaj identified the total stolen amount of $5,800 and expressed frustration over the lack of urgency from the police.

“It’s been more than two weeks, and I’ve done everything I can to help identify the thief,” Mr. Maharaj said. He emphasized the importance of national security and insisted that administrative matters like this must be resolved promptly, urging the police to take a more proactive approach.

Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew confirmed that the investigation is ongoing. He stated that investigators have managed to secure Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) footage from the liquor outlet in Lami and are currently awaiting approval from the bank to access camera footage from the ATM.

This situation highlights the significance of community support and the need for quick action from law enforcement agencies to ensure public safety and trust. While the investigation is still in progress, the collaboration between the police and the victims’ family could lead to a breakthrough.

In summary, the CID is actively investigating a significant theft case involving the mother of a local MP, emphasizing the need for prompt and decisive action in such matters to restore public confidence.
