A team from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) is currently conducting an investigation into a theft involving $5,800, stolen from Malti Devi, the mother of Member of Parliament Alvick Maharaj. The incident occurred on December 19, 2024, while Malti, 66, was at CWM Hospital to pick up medication. Initially unaware of the theft, she discovered her purse was missing the following morning as she was preparing for a physiotherapy session.
In a timely response, Mr. Maharaj contacted Bank South Pacific to block the card linked to the stolen purse, only to learn that the card had already been used for various transactions. Notably, the thief had withdrawn funds from ATMs and made a purchase of around $1,800 at Thirsty Liquor in Lami. Alarmed by the rapid use of the card, Mr. Maharaj lodged a formal complaint at the Raiwaqa Police Station, urging immediate action due to the urgency of the case.
Expressing frustration over the pace of the investigation, Mr. Maharaj highlighted that it has been over two weeks without significant progress, emphasizing the need for prompt action from law enforcement on matters of national security. He stated, “If we are serious about national security, administrative issues like this need to be resolved.”
Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew confirmed that the investigation is ongoing, noting that CCTV footage has been secured from the liquor outlet in Lami and they are awaiting approval from the bank to retrieve footage from the ATM.
This incident underscores the importance of swift action from law enforcement in theft cases and the necessity for community vigilance. The cooperation between Mr. Maharaj and the police serves as a reminder that collective efforts can lead to positive outcomes. As the investigation continues, there is hope that the authorities will identify the culprit and recover the stolen funds, reinforcing public trust in the security measures being implemented.
In summary, the CID is actively working on a significant theft case involving the mother of an MP, highlighting ongoing issues pertaining to security and police responsiveness, while also showcasing steps being taken to address these challenges effectively.
