A team from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) is currently looking into a theft case involving $5,800 stolen from Malti Devi, the mother of Member of Parliament Alvick Maharaj. The incident reportedly occurred on December 19, 2024, when Malti, 66, realized her purse was missing while at CWM Hospital to collect medication.

Mr. Maharaj explained that although she was unaware at the time of the theft, she discovered the purse was absent the following morning while preparing for a physiotherapy appointment. Reacting quickly, he contacted Bank South Pacific to block the card. However, the bank informed him that the card had already been used for unauthorized withdrawals and purchases.

The thief allegedly withdrew cash from ATMs and made a purchase of approximately $1,800 at Thirsty Liquor in Lami. Concerned about the swift use of her card, Mr. Maharaj promptly filed a complaint with the Raiwaqa Police Station, urging for immediate investigation. He expressed frustration regarding the slow pace of the investigation, noting it has been over two weeks since the incident occurred.

He emphasized the importance of addressing administrative issues related to national security and called for the police to adopt a more proactive approach in similar cases.

Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew confirmed that the investigation is underway. The authorities have secured CCTV footage from the liquor outlet and are awaiting approval from the relevant bank to access additional footage from the ATM.

This ongoing investigation underscores the importance of swift action and collaboration among security agencies to address theft and enhance public safety. The situation represents an opportunity for law enforcement to improve procedures and responsiveness, ensuring that similar incidents are handled more effectively in the future.

Overall, with the ongoing investigation and the retrieval of CCTV footage, there is hope that the authorities will identify the culprit and recover the stolen funds. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance and prompt reporting in safeguarding personal belongings.
