A team from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) is looking into a theft of $5,800, which was taken from the mother of Member of Parliament Alvick Maharaj. The incident occurred on December 19, 2024, when 66-year-old Malti Devi realized her purse was missing while she was at CWM Hospital collecting her medication.
“It was only the next day, around 9 a.m., when she was about to pay for a physiotherapy session that she noticed her purse was gone,” Mr. Maharaj explained. Concerned, he promptly contacted Bank South Pacific to block her card. It was at this point he learned that the card had already been used for various withdrawals and purchases.
According to Mr. Maharaj, the suspect had withdrawn funds from ATMs and made a purchase at Thirsty Liquor in Lami, which amounted to approximately $1,800. After reporting the incident to the police at Raiwaqa Police Station, he expressed his dissatisfaction with the lack of urgency in handling the case.
“I’ve done everything I can to help the police find the culprit, but it’s been over two weeks and there hasn’t been much progress,” Mr. Maharaj stated, urging for a more proactive approach from law enforcement regarding national security matters.
Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew confirmed that the investigation is active and ongoing. “We have obtained Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) footage from the Lami location and are awaiting the necessary permissions from the bank to access the ATM security footage,” Mr. Chew added.
This case exemplifies the significant impact of cybercrime and the importance of timely responses from law enforcement agencies. While challenges persist, the police’s efforts to track down evidence through CCTV and bank cooperation offer hope for a resolution. Community vigilance and quick action from officials are crucial in ensuring such incidents are addressed effectively, ultimately fostering a safer environment for all.
In summary, an investigation is underway concerning a significant theft impacting the family of MP Alvick Maharaj, highlighting ongoing issues around security and police responsiveness, yet there are steps being taken to address these challenges.
