Katalaini Biliwaqa Joyce, a recent graduate from the Fiji National University, has inspired many with her story and a heartfelt message to mothers everywhere: it’s essential to carve out time for oneself. Joyce, who earned an Advanced Diploma in Leadership and Management, described her educational journey as both challenging and rewarding.
Originally from Waiqanake near Lami Town and with family ties in Suvavou, Joyce stood out as she was the only graduate from her cohort who made a significant journey from abroad for the ceremony. “I actually flew in from Samoa just to come and graduate, and I’m going back,” she shared, highlighting the lengths she went to achieve her academic goals.
Her path involved adapting to an online learning environment, engaging in virtual classes and study groups while managing work responsibilities at a resort, including one she recently launched in Samoa. Despite the obstacles, Joyce expressed gratitude for the support she received, stating, “It was pretty hard, but I was so glad that I had a very supportive group.”
At 45, Joyce celebrated not only her graduation but also her role as a mother of three, marking this milestone as her first academic achievement. “I’ve never studied. I’ve just pursued studying now, and I said, ‘Why not?’” she reflected. Though her children could not attend the graduation, the presence of her sisters provided support.
Joyce’s message to mothers emphasizes the importance of pursuing individual dreams and ambitions, encouraging them to take the leap. “We tend to think we don’t have the time, because if you don’t try, then you wouldn’t know how far you can go,” she said, delivering an empowering reminder that personal fulfillment can profoundly impact both individuals and their families.
Her story serves as a beacon of hope, illustrating that persistence and support can lead to remarkable accomplishments, regardless of age or circumstance.
