The Ministry of Public Works is set to initiate a significant water infrastructure project in 2025, with an investment of $40 million aimed at resolving ongoing water supply challenges in various parts of the Suva region. Minister Ro Filipe Tuisawau has noted that the elevated Princess Road water project has already undergone tendering and evaluation processes, pending a final decision from the board in the near future.
This extensive project is expected to unfold over an 18-month timeframe next year. Ro Filipe emphasized that the development will greatly enhance water supply to the elevated areas of Suva, specifically targeting irregular water delivery in communities such as Colo-i-Suva, Khalsa, Tacirua, and Tamavua.
Key components of the initiative include the construction of a new 1.43-kilometer gravity pipeline from the Sawani junction to the Buresasa pump station, situated between Waimanu junction and Colo-i-Suva. The project will also involve the establishment of a pump station at Buresasa and a rising main pipeline extending about 5.27 kilometers to the Colo-i-Suva reservoir, which will feature a newly built steel tank reservoir with a capacity of 2×5 megalitres.
Additionally, the planned changes will shift the water supply from a pumping system to a gravity-fed system. This transition is anticipated to enhance the resilience of the water supply, particularly since the Viria Water Treatment Plant is better equipped to manage high turbidity events that the Tamavua Water Treatment Plant currently faces.
This project not only promises to improve access to clean water for residents but also reflects a broader commitment to infrastructure development in Fiji, fostering a future where reliable water supply can support community growth and health.
