FIJI GLOBAL NEWS

Beyond the headline

A heavy rain alert remains in force for the entire Fiji group as an active trough of low pressure lies over the islands. Associated cloud, showers and periods of heavy rain — with a chance of thunderstorms — are expected to affect the country through the next few days under a prevailing north to northeast wind flow.

Through to midnight tomorrow, the Yasawa and Mamanuca groups, the Northern Division, Ra–Rakiraki, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands can expect occasional rain that will be heavy at times with a few thunderstorms. Rain is forecast to gradually spread to the rest of the group later today. Elsewhere there will be cloudy periods with some showers and isolated afternoon or evening thunderstorms. Localised heavy falls may lead to flash flooding of low-lying areas. Winds will be moderate to fresh from the north to northeast and seas moderate to rough.

The outlook for Monday remains unsettled, with occasional rain that may be heavy at times and isolated thunderstorms expected over most places. Localised heavy falls again pose a risk of flash flooding in low-lying areas. Moderate to fresh northeasterly winds are expected to continue, with moderate to rough seas persisting around the islands.

Town-by-town details: Navua, Suva and Nausori will see cloudy periods with showers and isolated afternoon or evening thunderstorms as rain develops later today (today’s maximum about 30°C; tomorrow 24–30°C; Monday 24–29°C). Nadi, Lautoka and Ba are forecast cloudy with some showers and developing rain later today (today’s max about 31°C; tomorrow 23–30°C; Monday 24–29°C). Sigatoka and the Coral Coast will be cloudy with showers and possible thunderstorms later today (today’s max 31°C; tomorrow 24–31°C; Monday 23–30°C). Tavua and Rakiraki, Labasa, Savusavu, Nabouwalu and much of the Northern Division should expect occasional rain, heavy at times with a few thunderstorms (typical daily highs around 30°C and night‑time lows around 24°C). Taveuni’s forecast is similar, with tomorrow’s high near 29–30°C.

A separate strong wind warning remains in force for Rotuma. The island is experiencing strong northeasterly winds up to about 45 km/h with gusts to 55 km/h; over the surrounding waters northeasterly winds of 20–25 knots are expected, gusting to 30 knots, with rough seas. Occasional rain, heavy at times, and a few thunderstorms are forecast there as well, and the situation is expected to continue into Monday.

People in flood-prone and low-lying areas should be prepared for sudden rises in water and avoid driving through flooded roads. Mariners should exercise caution: seas are expected to be moderate to rough around Fiji, and gusty strong winds and rough seas are likely around Rotuma.
