A total of 365 individuals graduated from the Regional and Rural Maritime Technical and Vocational Education and Training program at Fiji National University’s Naiyaca Campus. The cohort comprised 114 women and 251 men who completed a diverse array of 14 short courses, including domestic electrical installation, plumbing, floriculture, boat repair, small business management, cookery, and baking.

These practical skill sets are designed to enhance self-employment opportunities, improve livelihoods, and foster resilience in rural communities throughout the region. Major Penasio Valeca Mamau from the Republic of Fiji Military Forces addressed the graduates, emphasizing that their achievements extend well beyond receiving certificates.

“Development does not begin in boardrooms or behind big buildings. It begins in villages and homes when one person decides to learn a new skill and change their future,” he stated. Major Mamau highlighted that skills development transcends mere job creation. It lends dignity and independence, particularly in a landscape marked by geographical challenges, limited formal employment opportunities, climate change, and the migration of young residents to urban areas.

He affirmed that empowering individuals at home is crucial for the future prosperity of the North. Graduates who become electricians, plumbers, boat repairers, or entrepreneurs strengthen their communities and contribute to family cohesion.

The training program aligns with the government’s Na Vualiku initiative, aimed at advancing the North through infrastructure improvements, economic growth, and human capital development. While infrastructure such as roads, ports, and markets are vital, Major Mamau stressed that sustainable development hinges on having a skilled populace.

He encouraged graduates to actively apply their new skills to create meaningful change within their communities. “Do not let these certificates gather dust. Apply them. Lead in your villages. Inspire others. Strengthen your communities,” he urged. He also praised Fiji National University for bringing training directly to rural and maritime communities, ensuring that talent has a chance to flourish throughout the Northern region.

This initiative not only promises a brighter future for the graduates but also holds the key to uplifting entire communities, showcasing the potential that arises when education meets local needs.
