This year marks a significant milestone as it celebrates the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, recognized as a transformative framework aimed at advancing gender equality globally. Fiji, as a signatory to this declaration, will participate in the upcoming 69th session of the Commission on the Status of Women at the United Nations headquarters in New York from March 10 to 21.
In preparation for this important meeting, a gathering was held in November for governments, civil society, and non-governmental organizations across the Asia-Pacific region. While there have been notable advancements in the 30 years since the declaration was instituted, challenges still exist in many countries.
Pacific feminist Sharon Bhagwan-Rolls, a pivotal figure in gender advocacy during the inception of the Beijing Declaration, emphasized the necessity of sustained dialogue and collaboration among nations. She noted that leaders of the Pacific Islands Forum have rejuvenated the commitment to gender equality in 2023, exemplified by the establishment of an annual meeting for women leaders and a triennial women’s conference.
