$30 Million Revamp: Transforming Fiji’s Informal Settlements

The government will allocate approximately $30 million for the enhancement of informal settlements located on Viti Levu and Vanua Levu, according to Housing Minister Maciu Nalumisa. He announced that four informal settlements are currently under construction, while two additional settlements are set to begin construction in the current financial year.

The settlements currently being built include Sakoca in Nasinu, which has 174 households; Tavela in Nadi with 68 households; Field 4 in Lautoka, which consists of 77 households; and Tore, also in Lautoka. The two upcoming projects include Vuniika in Labasa, featuring 101 households, and Wabuyaya in Ba, which accommodates 35 households.

Nalumisa also mentioned that efforts are ongoing for 16 more informal settlements, with plans to finalize engineering designs by the end of the year before starting construction.
