At just 23 years old, Sikeli Naucukidi made the courageous decision to return to school earlier this year, and his commitment has paid off as he successfully passed the Fiji Year 13 Certificate examination. His accomplishment fills him with hope for a brighter future despite the challenges he faces in his daily life.

Living in Delakado, Dawasamu, Tailevu, Sikeli walks to his 8 PM classes at Nabua Secondary School. His responsibilities extend beyond education; he also works as a security officer, often commuting on foot due to financial constraints. With limited income, Sikeli has to prioritize his family’s needs, including putting food on the table for his wife, Siteri, and their daughter, which can be a struggle.

“I learned about the Matua Program at Nabua Secondary School from a friend,” Sikeli shared. “I decided to join and paid $120 for the year. Besides covering my fees, I have to ensure my family’s basic needs are met. However, seeing my results brought tears of joy to my eyes, reaffirming my faith in God.”

The family’s sacrifices are significant. Sikeli expressed how he often walks long distances from his home to Vatuwaqa for work and then back to Nabua for classes before returning home to Tamavua. His determination stems from a desire to provide a better future for his daughter, ensuring she does not face the same hardships he and Siteri endured.

Siteri, who is originally from Rukuruku on Ovalau, echoed her husband’s sentiments, encouraging school dropouts and those who have already left education to consider going back. “If my husband can do it, then anyone with determination can achieve a better life,” she said. The couple has faced tough times, sometimes having to make do with simple meals such as rice and tea, but they remain focused on their goal of securing a good future for their daughter.

Reflecting on their past struggles, Sikeli recalled his time at the University of the South Pacific four years ago. He was just 19 when he learned that Siteri was pregnant. Despite facing backlash from family and friends, the couple chose to support one another and grow stronger together in faith as they prepared for their child’s arrival.

Today, with the support of a close family friend, Sikeli and Siteri are optimistic about their future. Their story is a testament to resilience, faith, and the belief that with determination, it is possible to overcome life’s challenges and strive for a better tomorrow.
