$21 Million Upgrade: New Hope for 769 Households

The development of four informal settlements on State land is set to benefit 769 households at an estimated cost of $21 million. Housing and Local Government Minister Maciu Nalumisa shared this information in Parliament on Monday while updating on the subdivision of informal settlements that began in January of last year.

The settlements in question include Cuvu in Sigatoka, Sasawira in Nausori, River Rd in Nasinu, and Wainivula in Caubati, Nasinu. The minister noted that his ministry had secured development leases from the Lands Ministry for the advancement of these areas.

Among the settlements, the Sasawira Settlement spans 17.3 acres at 9 Miles. River Rd in Narere covers 26.2 acres, while Caubati, known as Mama’s Place, encompasses 21.5 acres and is currently in the planning phase.

Mr. Nalumisa added that these four settlements, along with three others situated on iTaukei Land Trust Board (TLTB) land, are expected to see the completion of construction by the year’s end. Earlier in the year, his ministry initiated a lot allocation process, distributing application forms to current residents, enabling the Lot Allocation Committee to identify households eligible for government assistance.

The total cost for developing the Cuvu Settlement stands at $3.7 million. As a result of the lot allocation process, 105 households in Cuvu will soon have the opportunity to legally own house blocks with a 99-year lease title.
