As we step into 2025, the Pacific Recycling Foundation (PRF) is urging for a united approach to enhance sustainable waste management and overcome existing obstacles that have hindered progress. Amitesh Deo, the founder of PRF, emphasized that while 2024 saw important advancements in addressing Fiji’s waste management issues with the help of various partners, the journey continues and much work remains to be done.
Deo expressed optimism, stating, “2025 must be the year for lasting transformation through united, genuine, and cross-sector collaboration.” He highlighted the need to transform the achievements made in 2024 into sustainable and scalable solutions that will engage all communities and tackle the root causes of the waste management crisis.
In the previous year, PRF made significant headway by establishing the Pacific Recyclers Alliance, which encourages regional cooperation to address common waste management challenges. Additionally, the recognition of “collection pillars of recycling” in regional discussions has provided essential recognition and support for informal recyclables collectors.
The foundation also expanded its recycling efforts to the outer islands of Fiji, launched an innovative soft plastics recycling initiative, and integrated the CPR (Community Plastic Recycling) workforce into formal job structures through the “I Recycle” program, which has been adopted by over 20 organizations and communities.
In 2024, PRF successfully diverted 4,837 tonnes (nearly five million kilograms) of recyclables from landfills, showcasing a significant move towards improved waste management practices driven by PRF’s customized recycling initiatives. However, Deo noted that there are ongoing challenges, especially in underserved areas, and stressed the importance of scaling efforts in the coming year while moving away from outdated practices.
Deo is calling on the government to initiate transformative changes in waste management, urging policymakers to focus on long-term, sustainable solutions in collaboration with PRF, instead of quick fixes. He has also encouraged businesses to adopt more meaningful sustainability practices and invest in effective, long-term strategies for environmental stewardship.
Corporate responsibility should be viewed as a commitment to create a sustainable future for everyone, where businesses are held accountable for their environmental impact.
This call to action represents an opportunity for collective progress towards a greener future, highlighting the importance of collaboration across sectors to ensure a healthier planet for generations to come. Now is the time for all stakeholders to come together and commit to making a real impact in sustainable waste management.
