Deputy Prime Minister and Tourism Minister Viliame Gavoka has emphasized the Government’s commitment to developing Vanua Levu, acknowledging its significant potential and distinctive appeal. During the launch of the Damodar City Labasa Hotel Brand, Gavoka announced that the Government, in partnership with the World Bank, is investing $200 million in the northern region through the Vanua Levu Tourism Development Programme.
He highlighted that $61.5 million of this investment will focus on overcoming growth barriers, which include improvements to transport, infrastructure, and essential services, alongside enhancing private sector capabilities. Gavoka stated that the Government will persist in supporting initiatives that align with its broader objectives, ensuring that growth remains sustainable, inclusive, and advantageous for everyone. He further noted that as Fiji’s economy heavily relies on tourism within the services sector, it is crucial to significantly increase the current contribution, which stands at three percent.
