The Ministry of Public Works has announced an allocation of nearly $2.5 million aimed at road construction and enhancements. Minister Ro Filipe Tuisawau emphasized that the revival of the Public Works Department (PWD) has played a crucial role in accelerating rural infrastructure development, allowing for direct government involvement in these initiatives.

This funding initiative encompasses not only the timely maintenance of roadways but also the improvement of essential public facilities. To bolster these engineering projects, the ministry has acquired approximately $2.6 million worth of heavy machinery.

Current projects include significant upgrades to roads such as the Naisogo Road, which connects Davuilevu and Colo-i-Suva, as well as the Naiserelagi to Nalawa Road in Ra, along with various other roads in the Western and Northern Divisions. These ongoing works aim to enhance connectivity in rural regions, addressing long-standing infrastructure challenges faced by these communities.

The PWD’s re-establishment follows its closure by the previous administration, marking a renewed commitment to rebuilding workforce capabilities within the government. This strategic move is anticipated to lead to improved infrastructure development, providing better access for communities and stimulating economic growth.

These initiatives reflect a positive outlook for the future, as they represent a proactive strategy to enhance road conditions and ultimately improve the quality of life for residents throughout Fiji. The government’s focus on infrastructure development underscores a hopeful commitment to better connectivity and economic opportunities for local communities.
