The government has allocated nearly $16 million to the Lagilagi Housing Estate project under the Public Rental Board (PRB), which is set to provide affordable housing for low-income earners in Jittu Estate. Minister for Housing and Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa, recently updated Parliament on the project that commenced in 2009, initiated by the previous government in partnership with the Pacific Community Network Charitable Trust (PCN) and a German Catholic organization.
The minister highlighted the project’s objective of aiding the PCN in constructing low-cost housing units for local residents. Up to now, 117 housing units have been completed, but 36 remain unfinished. Following a Cabinet decision on January 17, 2024, the responsibility for completing these remaining units was assigned to the PRB, which successfully finished them at a budget of approximately $1.6 million, with plans to open them soon.
Nalumisa expressed appreciation for the collaboration with the Ministry of Youth and Sports in creating recreational areas for the community. Together, nearly 160 families are expected to benefit from the housing estate, in addition to the 1,400 families already residing in the surrounding Jittu Estate area. Despite space limitations posing some challenges for further expansions, the ministry is looking into redesigning the units to maximize housing opportunities and has initiated discussions with the Ministry of Lands to acquire more land for additional construction.
The minister reassured that Jittu Estate residents will be prioritized in future housing opportunities, especially in the upcoming phases of development. He emphasized the importance of relocating families from informal settlements into secure housing. Moreover, he addressed concerns related to families affected by PCN, stating that refunds have been processed for those with accommodation receipts, while cases involving other services, such as education, are being reviewed.
The PRB is also working through tenant surveys to resolve issues concerning significant payments made by tenants interacting with PCN. Nalumisa acknowledged irregularities raised by an Opposition MP, including reports of non-eligible tenants occupying flats, and assured that the ministry would take appropriate action to address these matters.
This investment in affordable housing represents a commitment to improving living conditions for low-income families, providing hope for future developments that prioritize the needs of the community. The ongoing construction and planning efforts demonstrate a proactive approach to addressing housing shortages and ensuring sustainable living situations for residents.
