The government has made a significant financial commitment of nearly $16 million to the Lagilagi Housing Estate project, under the Public Rental Board (PRB), aimed at providing affordable housing solutions for low-income earners residing in Jittu Estate. Minister for Housing and Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa, disclosed this information during a recent parliamentary session, detailing that the project commenced back in 2009.
Originally initiated by the previous government in collaboration with the Pacific Community Network Charitable Trust (PCN) and the German Catholic organization, the project aims to facilitate the construction of low-cost housing units within Jittu Estate. As of now, 117 housing units have been completed, although there are still 36 units yet to be finished.
In a positive development, the Cabinet authorized the PRB on January 17, 2024, to oversee the completion of these unfinished units, with a budget of approximately $3 million. Nalumisa reported that the PRB successfully completed the construction of the remaining units at a reduced cost of $1.6 million, and they are nearing readiness for occupation.
Minister Nalumisa expressed appreciation towards the Ministry of Youth and Sports for their collaboration in creating recreational spaces for both the new residents and the existing families in the area, enhancing community living. This project will ultimately benefit close to 160 families and also considers the needs of an additional 1,400 families living on the opposite side of Jittu Estate.
The minister acknowledged space limitations that have hindered the original construction plans, necessitating a redesign to accommodate more families. He emphasized the urgency to provide more standardized housing opportunities for Jittu Estate residents, especially those currently living in informal settlements.
Addressing past grievances regarding the PCN, the minister reassured that most affected families have been refunded, and those with unresolved claims related to education or other services are being processed.
Furthermore, a social survey of current tenants, particularly those previously associated with PCN, revealed some irregularities which the ministry is pursuing. Opposition MP Premila Kumar raised concerns regarding non-eligible tenants occupying flats, and the minister affirmed that steps will be taken to rectify such issues.
In summary, this governmental initiative is not just about building houses; it represents a comprehensive effort to uplift low-income families, ensuring they have access to safe and affordable housing. The continued dedication to resolving grievances and expanding housing solutions reflects a commitment to strengthening the community and fostering resilience among its members.
Overall, this investment and the forthcoming completion of housing units are promising steps toward enhancing living conditions and providing stability for families in Jittu Estate.
