The government has invested nearly $16 million into the Lagilagi Housing Estate project, which aims to provide affordable housing for low-income earners in Jittu Estate. Minister for Housing and Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa, announced in Parliament that the initiative, initiated by the previous government together with the Pacific Community Network Charitable Trust (PCN) and a German Catholic organization, began in 2009.
The primary objective of this project has been to assist in constructing low-cost housing units for Jittu Estate’s residents. Currently, 117 units have been completed, with 36 more still to be finished. However, progress is being made as on January 17, 2024, Cabinet approved the Public Rental Board (PRB) to manage the completion of these units, which are now finished at a budget of approximately $1.6 million and are expected to be opened soon.
Recognizing the significant community need, Mr. Nalumisa highlighted that approximately 160 families will benefit from the new housing, with additional capacity being considered for families living in nearby informal settlements. He noted challenges related to land constraints that have limited the initial plans for two-bedroom units and is advocating for redesigned housing units to accommodate more families.
Furthermore, the government is taking steps to prioritize Jittu Estate residents for new housing opportunities in the project’s second phase and is actively discussing with the Ministry of Lands for further land acquisition to expand housing infrastructure.
The minister also addressed issues raised by families affected by PCN, stating that refunds have been processed for those with accommodation receipts, while efforts to review and assist other cases are ongoing. To ensure fairness, tenant surveys are being conducted, and any claims of irregularities are being investigated, underscoring the government’s commitment to transparency and accountability.
This ongoing investment in affordable housing reflects a significant commitment by the government to address the needs of low-income families in the region, providing both immediate relief and long-term housing solutions. As more families prepare to occupy the new units, this project could serve as a model for future housing initiatives aimed at improving living conditions for underserved communities.
In summary, the Lagilagi Housing Estate project exemplifies a proactive approach to tackling housing challenges, ensuring that vulnerable populations receive the support they need for a better quality of life.
