$15 Million Boost for Fiji’s Housing Development: A New Era Begins

The Ministry of Housing in Fiji has secured a $15 million funding agreement with New Zealand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (NZMFAT). This initiative aims to enhance Technical Assistance, Strategic Planning, and Institutional Strengthening over a three-year term, culminating in the establishment of a National Housing Database.

Minister for Housing, Maciu Nalumisa, emphasized that this partnership represents significant progress toward a stronger, safer, and more prosperous Fiji. He noted that the agreement is built on good faith and mutual commitment to develop a robust institutional partnership that strengthens housing capacity.

The funding is intended to complement ongoing efforts by the Ministry in providing affordable housing solutions to Fijians. Minister Nalumisa mentioned that the partnership, which is committed until April 2029, will focus on achieving sustainable development outcomes, with a strong accountability framework in place that emphasizes relevance, effectiveness, efficiency, impact, and sustainability.

In her remarks, New Zealand’s High Commissioner to Fiji, Charlotte Darlow, highlighted that this funding will drive further development and positively impact the Fijian community. She reiterated the importance of social housing initiatives, not only for Fiji but as a model for the wider partner and donor community.
