A grant agreement worth approximately $15 million aimed at enhancing aircraft operations safety was signed between the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Government yesterday.
The project’s goal is to improve the capacity of transport infrastructure and promote sustainable growth through the provision of equipment and technical support from JICA.
The funding will cover the acquisition of two VHF omnidirectional radio beacons or Distance Measuring Equipment (VOR/DME), five airport fire engines, and three rescue boats.
These upgrades will be implemented at key airport facilities, including Nadi International Airport, Nausori International Airport, and the airports in Labasa, Savusavu, and Matei.
Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka highlighted the need to adhere to international aviation safety standards, recognizing the efforts of the Fiji Airports Ltd board and management staff.
He stated, “It is crucial to invest in Fiji Airport Ltd to ensure that our facilities meet the international standards for aviation safety set by the International Civil Aviation Organization.”
Rabuka expressed gratitude for the funding from JICA, noting its significance in enhancing aviation facilities and operational efficiency at major airports.
He added that the new equipment and services would greatly enhance the reliability and functionality of the airports, which serve as a key transportation hub in the region.
Japanese ambassador to Fiji Rokuichiro Michii remarked that the formalization of the project aims to upgrade aviation safety facilities at major airports in Fiji, in line with the country’s national development plan.
Fiji Airports Ltd CEO Mesake Nawari pointed out that many existing facilities are over 20 years old and require replacement. He welcomed the financial support for obtaining the vehicles and services from the Japanese government, underscoring the importance of water rescue capabilities.
