$15 Million Boost for Aviation Safety in Fiji

A grant agreement worth around $15 million was signed between the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Government to enhance the safety of aircraft operations. The project aims to bolster transport infrastructure capacity and support sustainable growth through equipment and technical assistance from JICA.

The planned equipment includes two VHF omnidirectional radio beacons (VOR/DME), five airport fire engines, and three rescue boats. These upgrades will be made at key airport facilities including Nadi International Airport, Nausori International Airport, and the airports in Labasa, Savusavu, and Matei.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka stressed the need to uphold international aviation safety standards and recognized the efforts of the board of directors and the management team at Fiji Airports Ltd. He stated, “Investment in Fiji Airport Ltd is crucial to ensure our facilities meet international aviation safety standards mandated by the International Civil Aviation Organization. Therefore, this funding from JICA is greatly valued in enhancing our aviation facilities and efficiency at major airports.”

He added that the new equipment and services would significantly boost the reliability and operational efficiency of airports, establishing them as a vital transportation hub in the region.

Japanese ambassador to Fiji, Rokuichiro Michii, noted that the formalization of the project aims to improve aviation safety facilities at major airports in Fiji, in line with the country’s national development plan.

Fiji Airports Ltd CEO Mesake Nawari pointed out that many existing facilities are over 20 years old and in need of replacement. He welcomed the funding support for the acquisition of these vehicles and services from the Japanese government, highlighting the significance of water rescue facilities.
