A grant agreement worth approximately $15 million was signed between the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Government yesterday, aimed at enhancing the safety of aircraft operations. This initiative is intended to bolster transport infrastructure capacity and promote sustainable growth through JICA’s provision of equipment and technical support.

The project will provide essential equipment, including two VHF omnidirectional radio beacons or Distance Measuring Equipment (VOR/DME), five airport fire engines, and three rescue boats. These upgrades will take place at key airport facilities such as Nadi International Airport, Nausori International Airport, Labasa, Savusavu, and Matei airports.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka underscored the significance of adhering to international aviation safety standards and recognized the contributions of the Fiji Airports Ltd board of directors and management staff. He stated, “Investments in Fiji Airport Ltd are crucial to ensuring our facilities meet international aviation safety standards set forth by the International Civil Aviation Organization.” He expressed gratitude for the JICA funding, which will greatly enhance the aviation facilities and operational efficiency of Fiji’s major airports, reinforcing their status as a vital transportation hub in the region.

Japanese Ambassador to Fiji Rokuichiro Michii noted that the formalization of this project aligns with Fiji’s national development plan, further aiming to improve aviation safety facilities at the country’s major airports. Fiji Airports Ltd CEO Mesake Nawari pointed out that many current facilities have been in use for over 20 years and require replacement. He welcomed the financial support from the Japanese government, particularly highlighting the necessity of water rescue facilities.
